Keeping warm hands is a frequent occupational challenge that I face. During the winter season I realize I’m not alone. Natural Health Magazine asked three experts how to warm cold hands. Here’s the gist of what each had to say:

Naturopath: To warm hands, one must increase circulation. He suggest supplements such as hawthorn, ginko biloba to stimulate circulation and essential fatty acids to reduce inflamation.

Family Physician: Insulate hands and feet and shield them from moisture. He also suggest the remedy of intervals of feet immersion in hot water (five minutes in, five minutes out) to help stop blood vessel constriction and get blood flowing normally.

Public Health Expert: To avoid the body’s tendency to pull warm blood away from your extremities, protect your core. Start by donning a tightly knit woolen hat that covers your ears. To keep your metabolism up (which helps warm you), be sure to stay well-hydrated and well-nourished, taking care to include a mix of fat and protein. It is also suggested to avoid dehydration through caffeinated drinks which increase the rate your body loses heat.
