Motivational speaker and sales guru Brian Tracy has done a lot of research on what it takes to succeed. He explains that one of the characteristics that distinguishes human beings from other animals is our “success instinct” in addition to the primitive survival instinct. According to Tracy, human beings are by nature driven to succeed. We are destined to never be satisfied because we are always striving to have and be more–to succeed. He came up with seven key ingredients for success. They make a lot of sense to me.

Peace of Mind–Freedom from fear, stress, lack, want, guilt and negative emotions.

Health and Energy– Freedom from sickness and disease, and having the vitality to accomplish goals.

These two ingredients are very closely related due to the psychosomatic effect: The health of the mind effects the health of the body and vice-versa.

Loving Relationships–The ability to enter into long term loving unions with other men and women. 85% of success in life is determined by how we get along with other people. A great measure of a loving relationship is how much you laugh in your relationship–laughter is the first that enters in a healthy relationship and the first thing to leave when a relationship is not healthy.

Financial Freedom–The capacity to earn enough money so that we don’t have to worry about money.

Worthy Goals and Ideals (or Values)–They give us a sense of meaning and purpose, which give our lives significance. The goals need to be consistent with your personal values.

Self Knowledge and Self Understanding–Understanding who you are, having self honesty and knowing what makes you tick.

Sense of Personal Fullfillment–Self actualization: Becoming everything that you’re capable of becoming, and moving everyday towards complete fulfillment. This ingredient is the ultimate result of all of the other six.

All of these steps require some daily effort in order to maintain them but what a nice payoff…sweet success!

What do you think? Would you add any other ingredients?
