For those of you who only take advice from traditional, allopathic medical professionals, The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends the following for dealing with chronic pain. Chronic pain is described as pain that persisits for longer than six months. Also note that the following is what they advise in addition to pain medication, of course. I believe pain medication should be taken only in extreme cases as there are plenty of natural remedies without the addictive side effects. But I digress. Here’s their list:

Physical therapy, including stretching and strengthening exercises. Shelley’s note: And Massage therapy too!

Low-impact exercise, including swimming, biking and walking.

Occupational therapy to learn how to change daily activities to avoid making pain worse.

Behavioral therapy, such as yoga and meditation, to increase relaxation and decrease stress. Shelley’s note: Hello?! Massage therapy too!

Lifestyle changes, including quitting smoking, getting plenty of sleep, eating a proper diet, and getting enough exercise.
