Arthritis pain fueled by the mind
A recent study conducted by a team from the University of Manchester Rheumatic Diseases Centre in the UK discovered that arthritis pain is processed by the median system of the brain that deals with fear and emotions.
In the study, six male and female patients who were suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee received PET scans to study both arthritic and experimental pain. The arthritic pain, they found, has a very strong emotional association suggesting that mind/body therapies (like Meditation) to reduce fear, and stress may be highly effective.
More studies are necessary but this initial one, though very small, has made a profound discovery that gives new hope to the millions who suffer from the pain of arthritis.
The study was reported in Arthritis & Rheumatism.
